I've met several linguistics students who've gotten into linguistics because of Arrival (and even more from Lord of the Rings, but give it time!)
Dr Lindsey FitzharrisSome academics turn up their noses at movie adaptations or popular history books, but I call them "gateway drugs" into deeper scholarship. How many of us fell in love with history because a movie (or book) sparked our curiosity first? For me, it was Amadeus - it sent me down an 18thC rabbit hole.
THIS IS INCREDIBLE I LOVE IT
Dr Mark D. ScherzRhombophryne mavokely is a wee species from the northeast. Mavokely is Malagasy for ‘pink’ but literally translates as ‘small yellow’ (mavo = yellow, kely = small). I LOVE this. As they're small, sometimes pink and sometimes yellowish, the name seemed apt. This one is for @gretchenmcculloch.com 🧪🐸
I got invited by @sarahmackattack.bsky.social as part of the scicomm wave!
Jake_VigTomorrow is "Shoutout the Person Who Gave You a Bluesky Invite Code" Day. It was a cool time for cool people to drag other cool people here.
Somehow I missed this incredible Weird Al Yankovic song that's entirely in palindromes when it came out, so in case that's also you, please enjoy it now
Finally we have made the long-requested episode that you can share with your overly credulous friend who thinks the button dogs on instagram are actually cracking jokes rather than being highly edited (plus lots of whale facts!!)
LingthusiasmCan we teach dogs to express their needs better by pressing buttons? How about bonobos? What have we learned from the first-ever recording of a sperm whale birth? In this episode we get enthusiastic about how people use technology to enhance our communication with these three animals!
