Another creative argument for more North Sea oil: make it net zero with (currently non-scalable) CCS! Surely this will work. More magical thinking justified by the myopic logic of managing tons.

Here’s how to make North Sea drilling compatible with net zeroEnergy project licences should be conditional on carbon dioxide disposalwww.ft.com

5/ Private climate standards were never going to drive decarbonization. Now we can stop pretending they will. FIN

4/ Both SBTi & CDP are fixated on “managing tons:” the obsessive focus on measuring, monitoring & trading GHGs. This distracts from the real challenge: creating green assets & the political interests supporting their expansion. Managing tons has many pernicious effects, as I explain in my new book.

3/ This is also why the so-called “gold standard” on net zero – the Science-Based Targets Initiative – has also progressively weakened its rules. Their new version is just the most recent instance of this weakening.

2/ 12 years ago, I explained the rise of private standards like CDP. These voluntary rules arise when states can’t or won’t regulate and NGOs have lots of technical expertise. But this was in an era when states were still pretending to care about climate, both domestically and internationally.

LOTS of polisci research on the political economy of climate change, w/ similar arguments with many diff causal pathways. See also: @jonasnahm.com @dustintingley.bsky.social @leahstokes.bsky.social @mattomildenberger.bsky.social @jonasmeckling.bsky.social just to name a few

I look forward to reading this. See my book, which foregrounds green asset owners (akin to climate mitigating ones in your framework) as critical actors in existential politics.

And if you want to know why this is a terrible idea, check out the excellent work of NoJetsTO, available here: (2/2) environmentaldefence.ca/nojetsto/
