FWIW, Meta was fully aware of how these glasses would primarily be used. The glasses were designed to erase consent, and that is why they exist. Anything that they do that suggests they want to ameliorate this use is an attempt to win the PR battle and manipulate public opinion.

But the stigma was very real (it was also much harsher in the art space, art teachers/schools were very VERY negative about anything looking “anime”). Now, I do think some people overexaggerate the severity of a lot of this stuff, but again, that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a thing at all.

Anyway, it is entirely possible to for something to have growing popularity in an enthusiast space while also being stigmatized by the broader public (or rival enthusiast spaces). I mean I attended my local college’s anime club starting in *elementary* school because my parents were supportive

I also think that controversy over censorship of anime that aired on TV may have contributed to some of this perception as well. Sailor Moon, DBZ, and Tenchi Muyo were all notably censored in the US (it was common for official VHS releases to have censored/uncensored versions for some shows even)

I think in more normie spaces though it was a combination of the weird japan trend bringing stuff like hentai to the forefront (often as something of a punchline) and the deep-seated perception of animation as a children’s medium where anime often did not fit aesthetically in many people’s minds.

I’ll just add to this that I don’t think this stigma that existed in a lot of places suggests that anime wasn’t growing in popularity at the time. To be honest I think a lot of it was a backlash type reaction to it—see also the way the gaming press was treating Japanese games at the time.

I do think that was part of it (and even if not so much for the audience, for parents and the execs greenlighting the project)

I actually recall my aunt contacting me early in college to help explain to the school of a client of hers (at the time she was doing some social service work) that the manga they were reading was in fact not pornography just because it had a (non-sexual) communal bath scene in it
