David Mamet: “In the bad film the fellow says, “hello Jack, I’m coming over to your home this evening because I need to get the money you borrowed from me.” In the good film, he says, “Where the hell were you yesterday?”

"I walked out to her and whispered ‘don’t let the bastards get you down’. She smiled and said, 'I’m not down'." Kris Kristofferson 🙏

When an entire arena boos you for telling the truth, you quickly learn who has courage. Kris Kristofferson walking onto that stage and standing beside Sinéad as the insults rained down remains one of the most powerful acts of human decency I’ve ever seen. Three years resting in peace 🙌🏼🤍🙌🏼

"Writing a book is a horrible, exhausting struggle, like a long bout of some painful illness. One would never undertake such a thing if one were not driven on by some demon whom one can neither resist nor understand." — George Orwell, Why I Write

P.S. I close my eyes and see a seagull in the desert, high, against unbearably blue sky. There is hope in the past. I am writing to you all the time, I am writing with both hands, day and night. Franz Wright

Nowadays, I live on the west coast of Ireland.

Fabulous photo. I once lived about 35 km from Land’s End, mainland England’s most westerly point, and 25 km from its neighbour Lizard Point, the most southerly. Later, I lived about 35 km from Malin Head, Ireland’s most northerly point. Talk about living on the edge.

Forty-one years ago, living in London and looking for work, I took the Tube to Wembley with my dole money in my pocket and hoping I might still snag a ticket. Somehow, I did.

On such a fabulous sunny day here in Sligo, you'd really have to wonder why I'm listening to Johnny Ray's "Just Walking in the Rain".

Yes, Canada was very good to me over the years. Indeed I published four of my books there. My latest, The Thickness of Ice (Baraka Books, Quebec), is set in Churchill on Hudson Bay.

"O Canada" I was fortunate to call Canada home for 18 wonderful years, from the remote reaches of northern Manitoba to the shores of the Maritimes. Wishing all my Canadian friends and followers a very Happy Canada Day!
