Our last speaker is Paul Nurse, Honorary Member and former President of the Genetics Society, talking about Genetic Analysis of Eukaryotic Cell Cycle Control. A fascinating look at how cells regulate division and maintain order through tightly controlled genetic networks.

Really great to hear Kay Davies, Honorary Member of the Genetics Society, give her talk “Rare disease diagnosis and therapy in the genomics era”. She highlighted how genomics is transforming the way we diagnose rare diseases and pushing new approaches to treatment into the clinic.

Great to hear David Baulcombe, Honorary Member of the Genetics Society, give his talk, "An RNA world". From RNA silencing to gene regulation, it was a fascinating look at discoveries that have transformed genetics and continue to shape research today.

Zohaib Khalid, one of our 2025 summer students, presenting his work on the function of dynamism in the plant cell wall. Our summer studentship is a fantastic way for undergraduates to access research, and 2025's cohort are so supportive and some of them are here to support their colleagues!

A pleasure to hear Deborah Charlesworth, Honorary Member of the Genetics Society, present her lecture, "Progress in understanding genome regions controlling Batesian mimicry in butterflies and sex determination". A great contribution from one of the field's leading evolutionary geneticists.

Congratulations to Prof Richard Durbin, winner of the 2026 Genetics Society Medal! His pioneering work in computational genomics has transformed how we analyse and understand genome sequences.

To end a fantastic day of talks, we have our Mendel Medal winner, Joe Felsenstein, joining us online to talk about comparative methods within species: connecting evolutionary time scales?

Brian Charlesworth, Honorary Member of the Genetics Society, delivered a thought-provoking lecture at Anniversary Day 2026 in Edinburgh titled “What has recombination ever done for us?”

Roger Cox, from the Mouse News Letter Ltd, presents @robinjournot.bsky.social with his Bruce Cattanach Prize for his outstanding PhD thesis related to the use of non-human in vivo animal models!

Veronica van Heyningen, Honorary Member of the Genetics Society, delivered a fascinating talk titled “Journey through genetics to biology”, reflecting on a remarkable career spanning human genetics, developmental biology, and disease gene discovery!

We start our afternoon session with @hilarycmartin.bsky.social's Balfour Lecture. Her fantastic lecture gave insights into the genetic architecture of neurodevelopment disorders and cognitive ability from clinical and population cohorts.

We end our morning session with James Spencer, one of our summer studentship awardees, talking about his summer project on CycD7;1, stomatal functionality and drought response!

A privilege to hear Prof David Sherratt, Honorary Member & former President of the Genetics Society. Prof Sherratt made pioneering contributions to bacterial genetics, from understanding plasmids and genetic recombination to revealing how bacterial chromosomes are organised & inherited within cells.

It was great to hear Shaoqi Wang share her work with the genetics community and celebrate her achievement as this year's Sir Kenneth Mather Memorial Prize (Undergraduate) recipient. Congratulations on a well-deserved award and an excellent talk!
