In the 1800s, dirt and rubble were used to extend Manhattan’s shoreline. To prepare for tunnel boring through this fill, we’re installing pipes in Hudson River Park that will circulate cold brine underground, freezing the loose material into a solid block that is easier to tunnel through.

While the tunnel boring machines are assembled, crews are building access shafts in NY and NJ that will enable workers on the surface to support construction deep underground. Workers are currently installing the cap beams around the top of the shaft walls. Next step: excavation.

Two years ago today, GDC signed the Full Funding Grant Agreement for the Hudson Tunnel Project. You can see the progress we've made since then on both sides of the Hudson River, and in it. We're getting the job done, and we won’t stop until we deliver the reliable infrastructure riders deserve!

The walls of the new tunnel tubes will be made of thousands of interlocking concrete segments. The segments for the section of the tunnel under the Palisades in New Jersey are being manufactured now at a factory in Connecticut. Completed segments will start shipping to New Jersey soon!
