At some point in the last 20 years someone at some tech company somewhere conned everyone into believing that “steps” are a meaningful measure of fitness.

I’ve held on to analog media my whole life because I always knew digital media was vulnerable both to corporate control and to format drift. But it never occurred to me that thanks to AI preinternet physical media might one day be the only uncorrupted versions of those novels and albums and images.

I’ve noticed that a good shibboleth for the current discourse is people who seem to think the Odyssey was originally composed in iambic pentameter.

I think a far higher risk to humanity than super intelligent AI is extremely dumb AI. The chance of a Matrix-type situation is way lower than the chance of, say, AI mistaking a flock of migrating birds for a nuclear missile. I am genuinely worried about an apocalypse brought on by dumb AI.

Greece travel tip: If you just start talking to a stranger in English, you’ll get a frown and there’s a 50/50 chance they won’t speak English to you even if they know how. But if you start off with a few words of broken Greek you get points for effort and they’ll switch to English on their own.

Terrible.

I think often of this little monologue by Fran Lebowitz where she talks about how an audience of highly critical connoisseurs once kept NYC culture on its toes. I think there are other factors besides AIDS that led to the decline, but basically she’s right: connoisseurs have been replaced by fans.

Knowing some Latin really helps if you’re learning French or Spanish. Knowing some Sanskrit really helps if you’re learning Hindi or Bengali. Knowing some Ancient Greek really does not help if you’re learning modern Greek and in fact will make things harder.
