Today the Senate is set to take its first votes on the Lindsey Graham Sanctioning Russia Act. With 84 cosponsors it's expected to move fast and pass. Unfortunately, it's a bad bill that is unlikely to achieve its stated goals. The bill has 3 major flaws, if you read closely- 🧵

Dems rushing to pass the Lindsey Graham bill are making a major and regrettable mistake. They should take a minute and read fine print in this thing before they give Trump massive new tariff powers that he will certainly abuse
Congressman Don BeyerWe passed a good bill in the House to sanction Russia and help Ukraine. The bill offered by the late Senator Graham is not that bill, it is a bill that would give Trump new powers to impose additional tariffs of up to 100% on U.S. trading partners without congressional oversight.
House Republican leadership just pulled their veterans bill from the floor. Losing control of the floor again after 3 days doesn't seem to bode well for their chances to pass reconciliation, their toothless stock trading ban, the NDAA, and a government funding bill in a single week before the recess

clerk.house.govThe $13 billion intel price tag caught my eye. We've heard about munitions stocks, base/equipment repair etc, but this intel figure is close to the reported total annual CIA budget. It's the first time HPSCI has received reconciliation instructions per @mollyereynolds.bsky.social. What's it for? Idk
Aaron FritschnerRepublican budget reconciliation instructions are simple: - $12B bailout for farmers hurt by Trump's tariffs - $60B Iran war funding (DoD) - $13B Iran war funding (Intel👀) - $12B for voter suppression + Text exempting them from requirements to pay for it docs.house.gov/meetings/BU/...

Aaron FritschnerA big shout out to everyone who helps bring people into the world- the OB-GYNs, nurses, pediatricians, and all the other medical people and hospital staff — you do so much! I’ll be taking a break from my day job (and posting) for a while to spend time with our baby daughter. House Guy —> Dad Guy

Gabbard's resignation letter cited her husband's cancer diagnosis as the reason for her departure, but (predictably) Reuters is now reporting: "A source familiar with the matter said that Gabbard had been forced out by the White House." www.reuters.com/world/us/gab...

Democrats just defeated this bill, then Republicans pulled the War Powers Resolution vote on Iran because they didn't have the votes to defeat it. The measure is privileged in a way that requires it be brought up within a certain number of days, I *think* that will mean it comes back in early June.
Aaron FritschnerThe delay here is bc Republicans are unexpectedly losing the vote before the Iran resolution, on a bill to establish the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum, which Dems are opposing because R's rewrote a popular bipartisan version to add rightwing poison pills. Vote has been open for 40 mins

Aaron FritschnerWar Powers Resolution on Iran coming up in the House any minute now. It's the third vote in the series; right now we have 9 Republicans absent to just 2 Democrats (not sure who).
