Every few years the Home Office has to cook up a new Windrush, just to remind everyone how much power they have.

Wasn’t this clear in 2024? The Heritage/Goldwater/Pierce types finally had the fairground golden ring in their sticky hands, why would they ever give it up?

Right there is a clear political debate, it’s just not the one that the political desk at the BBC can allow. And to be fair *visible* friction in the system is what they report on. The real question is *unsayable* because the right would flounce out of any show that proposed that as a topic.

The debate about green energy versus hydrocarbons is clearly one, in a macro sense, between clusters of intense power versus diffuse—one might even say democratic—power. In a geopolitical sense an energy dependent UK is constrained. An energy independent has more freedom to determine its own course.

Their unwillingness to untangle that is to their everlasting shame, and that shame gets more intense as the climate and *political* systems get more unstable, because they’re interdependent.

The BBC shows that the climate catastrophe is very much a political subject, but not in the horse-racy way they think. It’s a real process that can be modeled thanks to 40+ years of research. It’s *how* we respond is what’s being debated, which is disguised by pretending we’re debating the *what*.

It’s read like one of those threatening letters the Assyrians used to send to their rivals.

That looks good. Or maybe I should restate: in an ideal timeframe these pieces would be compelling but theoretical, but since that’s really not the case, it’s good to have so much quality thought in one place.

Because ~sigh~ in the Real World™️ Republicans Get Away With Everything™️. Sadly, we all know that, although this could be flipped at any moment, this is how things work. It’s been like this since Saint Ronnie of blessèd memory. But equally sadly, people are on the whole content that this is so.

It’s doubly frustrating because it’s either necessary to do a quick training to get the client or their designer up to speed on what CMYK is, or the client gets snippy and defensive. Both outcomes are a time suck.

Ah yes, Seasteading 2.0. The need these guys have to both control the state (and the destinies of the 99.99%) and to put themselves outside of its jurisdiction is simultaneously pathological and suspicious.

Agree that their logic falls apart almost instantly. The step to “ad absurdum” writes itself. But I’m sure they’d respond by saying that the non-European whites should continue to follow their destiny as the superior race, or some similar stupid nonsense.

And calls like this, both made or amplified by Musk, and constantly promoted on X, are made in the US, which has close to 1/10th of the same population density.

This argument does not mean that the solution is violently removing every foreign-born person from the UK. That’s not what you’re suggesting, is it? The UK already has extremely tough immigration policy, to the point where it’s going to bring down a Russell university in the next 3 years.

All excellent points, and I’m sure someone like Laurence Reece would agree, but then why the hell is HM Government putting up with these obvious attempts to foment violence on such an industrial scale? Is it simply that everyone is scared of Trump?
