EVERYTHING about this intensely PR-workshopped canned response truly sounds like doom coming to this platform. Prioritizing civility over justice is how EVERY OTHER social media platform (and frankly, this one too) has become, to some degree, an unmanageable cognitohazard

My opinion on the matter, coincidentally, is that if Chrono Cross had NOT been connected to CT in any way, I doubt it would have received as much of the flak from players that it did, for precisely this reason -- framing it as a CT "sequel" invited unfavorable comparison from the jump.

I'm in a similar place with Chrono Cross -- the game's systems are internally cohesive, and the game's structure works. But it exists in a cultural context where it was billed as a Chrono Trigger sequel and given how large CT looms in the genre space, I think it's reasonable to consider it!

So, I don't necessarily disagree here (and I wish I wasn't having these thoughts at 7am on a Saturday after waking up way before my alarm, meaning nobody will see any of this) But I do want to draw a distinction between "critique" and "opinions," if that makes any sense.

Chrono Cross is a much more complicated story that includes, a main character body swap, music as a weapon, a complicated magic/element system, numerous characters, and a triumph that saves a character that was a fan favorite, and more, but it wasn't chrono trigger 2 meet media where they are

This is just a thought I'm having as I read various things tonight but I wonder if perhaps academics, as a class of professional, have a kneejerk negative response to "spectacle" if they've read any cultural theory, because it has this aura of "distraction/deception"

You can read Rob's responses in the thread this post is part of but I feel like this one, in particular, is relevant, as they say, to many of your interests.

I'm sure there are significant differences between the fields, as you say, but I think many Classicists wouldn't want EW's LRB review to be the standard-bearer for our field as a whole. (For several reasons!). Classics BlueSky is full of people having strong (often neg.) reactions to that review.

For non-academics: "Reviewer 2", in peer review terms, is the hyper-critical reviewer whose seemingly infinite series of critiques of your work are based on it not being what THEY would have written, and each critique is intended to slowly turn what you wrote into what THEY wrote.

Going solely by the excerpts in the linked piece at the head of the thread, it seems like Wilson is Reviewer 2ing the fuck out of this film, instead -- not meeting it where it is, but excoriating it for what it ISN'T. Writing LIKE an academic -- tone, structure -- but not AS an academic.
