1st F*ck Milei 2nd Us A quick reflection on the online hate Argentina received during the WC: we became everyone's punching bag, from the left to the right. Now that hostility is being used by Milei to fuel + hate. Before stereotyping an entire country, do the bare minimum: read beyond social media

Facing a Surge of Criticism, Argentines Have Something to Say (Gift Article)Many Argentines condemned their players’ racist chants and aggressive behavior during the World Cup, but rejected what felt like a sweeping stigmatization of their entire nation.www.nytimes.com

Negative, neutral, and unexpected results are not failures: they're evidence. Great initiative from @aer-ese-bes.bsky.social to give these studies the visibility they deserve. Better science means learning from what doesn't work, too.

Another way of academic extraction is inviting collabs from the Global South to build databases then leave them off the papers that use them. I once attended a talk where this was compared to the colonial practice of extracting artifacts to fill museums in imperial capitals. Same logic of extraction

I can't stress enough how disrespectful it is when colleagues in the Global North publish papers about our realities without a single author from the region. It's not "just data." Context matters. Interpreting our realities through your own framework isn't just exclusionary, it's weaker science.

"In this model, researchers frequently based in the Global North retain decision-making power over questions, methods, funding, and publications without being physically present in the study sites." 👉 Local collaborators often relegated to marginal roles with limited authorship recognition.

Have you seen this paper that makes a distinction btw helicopter, parachute, and remote-control science? onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

""Helicopter science" describes a practice where scientists from wealthier, developed regions travel to under-resourced communities to collect data, then leave to analyze and publish it without involving local researchers or benefiting the host community"

This one un particular blew my mind! Study on lichens of the Atacama desert, no co-author from Chile. Oh but the authors acknowledge the "exceptional understanding of the ecosystem" of the Chilean National Park rangers. 😕 enviromicro-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

I bet there'll still be that passenger who has a comment rather than a question

This is a thing? We are allowed to lecture at length to captive airplane passengers? This changes everything, I'm now practicing conference talks on my way to the conference.
