I can't understand while one the one hand UKRI is willing to fund two AI labs for £60M, while on the other cut back on basic science. It's only an issue because Jodrell Bank sits in the STFC portfolio, which also has the energy intensive accelerators. www.ukri.org/news/ukri-la...

Likewise as a climate scientist who began in radio astronomy I can’t understand how such a central and iconic part of your science infrastructure could be lost to current and future generations. 😥

What surprised me most in those talks wasn’t the lack of prior attendance—it was realizing how many people *want* to cross that first threshold. How might we make the first step feel safe, even exciting, for curious minds?

My career as a climate scientist has roots in Jodrell - it was where I first learned to code, for an undergrad project. Before that, I *hated* coding! But there I saw how it was used to learn new things about the world - which I now use in predicting climate change, inc. for the #IPCC. #SaveJodrell

I've spoken about climate science at the #bluedot festival of science and the arts several times, because it focuses on our own planet too. The most common thing I heard after? "I've never been to a science talk before"... Furious and heart-broken at this foot-shooting across science and education

I've been off socials for 2 years, but have to speak up. Utter madness to defund this flagship institution of UK science + education. International research, UNESCO-level heritage, training physicists (inc. me in 2000), inspiring public w/ visitor centre and bluedot festival. We must #SaveJodrell
