We've really come some distance when "tenants unions" are objecting to new homes. It's almost like they want you to be in a housing emergency, right? share.google/RHf9CJPkxajT...

Should the council have to pay taxes on city properties it owns and leaves vacant or derelict? share.google/ISzNUgYcKUsr... The inevitable consequence of folk howling for the state to take over every derelict building

I mean also surely there's other causes and people's who deserve 1.2m?

Maybe a bit more transparency around this story would help. 25k for a non EU student seems to fall well short of the money required to spend a year here including fees which are not cheap at UCD. Perhaps trying to spread the funding too thinly?

Don't disagree but most lay people would see this as a bike

AGS Louth is the latest. No e-bikes in these photos. And they say ‘one person detected pulling wheelies on a surron e bike ‘ - a quick Google tells me a Surron is an electric dirt/motor bike 🤷‍♂️ www.facebook.com/permalink.ph...

What's going is that Grainger is exactly the kind of author the Irish times would have turned up their nose at a year or two ago

The cat went on a bender today and they had to go look for him. They found him in the next block and he eventually popped over a wall, delighted with himself. The sister in law carried him home

in fact while we are at it, 280 or so pedestrians end up with serious injuries each year while walking, so lets be done with it and ban walking in public places

010

Apparently over 200 people die in road traffic accidents each year. 1200-1500 motor accidents here result in serious injuries. You know what, I've a great idea: lets ban cars....oh, wait

I think the "escooters/bikes shouldn't be on footpaths" narrative is also driven in part by the fact that so much cycle understructure is shared with pedestrians, & the general resentment at allocating space to bikes (& escooters) opens up the opportunity to attack them for just being there

fingalpimpernel

I've actually been roared at for up to an hour by elderly folk who claimed to have been "run over" by e-scooters 6 or 7 times & I'm wondering how they still manage to turn up with no signs of any actual injuries

this is the thing, all the rules are there already: you have to be 16, the vehicle has to have a max speed of 20km/h, you cannot ride on footpaths. The question there is why enforcement has been so weak, or why changing the age or dress of riders is going to be any different.

irishcycle

Action is harder than promising laws, but existing rules can take all problematic and illegal e-scooters and “e-bikes” off the road today performative I’m just starting to write about this…. From what medics have indicated — the injury type is more like a motorcycle injuries, which imdicate that…

I don't think its classicist as much as the extent to which a mostly older cohort of very loud people absolutely despise the people who ride e-scooters who are mainly migrant workers and teenage boys in hoodies

Maurice

So what happens if there's a few road deaths in quick succession, do FF/FG introduce a ban on cars? Do they fuck. This is yet another classist policy from official Ireland which does nothing to solve the problem. Adding e-scooters to learner permits (provisional)is an easy fix using existing laws.
