The visuals weren’t bad at least. It was a bit dark for my taste but I know that’s his style. And I thought some of the performances were memorable. But there were so many lines where I just couldn’t believe they put in that setting. There’s making it accessible and then there’s making it dumb.

I liked the land of the dead scene. I think it’s sort of weird who he talks to but it worked decently for the overall plot and I thought it was visually compelling. (Figured I’d end on a positive)

Sharing these random thoughts because as someone now very used to being in minorities I believe in the importance of vocalizing against a trend observations. 😅

I think part of what Emily Wilson gets right or at least an experience I shared is that I didn’t feel invested in most of these characters. I didn’t feel sad or scared or anything. And I cry at commercials ever since my first child so that’s pretty rare for me.

I was also irritated by silly things. Like why does it snow? lol

I really hated the sound/music. And I saw someone say the very small scaled suggestive Troy scenes were impactful because of the screams but the whole movie screamed so by the time you get there I didn’t find it impactful.

After you watch it I’ll send you her thoughts (as a contemporary translator) which really riled people up and created its own whole news cycle.

My positive hot take is still that Life of A Showgirl is a strong album about adult “earned” joy and it’s telling that people can’t appreciate that.

You could totally disagree too! Obviously lots of people love it. I went in expecting to disagree more with what Emily Wilson was bothered by because it’s been forever since I’ve read the poem and I don’t have a clear memory to compare against…so this reaction surprised me.

There’s a reason why when you start googling Odyssey and Faith every annoying evangelical has something to say about how it’s really about them. Not because that was Nolan’s goal but because he presented a confused moral canvas primed for their bullshit.

There’s a weird thing that happens where MAGA types self-sabotage for stupid reasons, disavowing popular culture they really should identify with, but then anyone left of McArdle starts to embrace it and idk I just think we can step outside the factions and really look at what art says (or doesn’t).

I fear I agree with Derek Thompson that it’s “kinda Christian” but I feel like it is such in a muddled mega church kind of way. And Ben Shapiro was right that it is sort of fundamentally a very conservative film, except that’s partly why it’s so confusing and hollow feeling at the end.

This is so fascinating! I never seem to agree with critics so maybe more of us should flood letterboxd anyway. I haven’t seen any Spider-Man in the past decade (aside from the avenger crossovers). I believe you it’s good, I wonder how opening only two weeks after the odyssey will impact it.

I was also not a fan of OBAA so maybe I am destined to not like whatever the main film of the year is now lol

It’s funny because there was that post going around earlier today about if academics were uptight or whatever about O Brother Where Art Thou but that was an MUCH more clever film. Feels insulting to suggest they are equivalent tbh lol

It was fine if you treat it like any other action film which I suspect many people will.
