Proud Delawarean. Fundamentally unchanged since the Triassic. You may not like it but this is what peak performance looks like.

This makes me worry she's been personally bitten by the crank bug. I've seen it happen to some otherwise very intelligent people. Some variation on "purifying the soul through diet and mystical practices" is a siren song for a LOT of people when they're stressed and need a sense of control.

My grandfather was an avid baseball player back in his day and a huge Orioles fan. When I was in high school I mentioned in front of him that I thought baseball players were handsome and he said, in his typical laconic way, "Honey, most of 'em are really stupid."

Warning, I don't look much like my profile picture, it's a few years old and fairly flattering.

One of these days I'm going to show up at a Kalmar Nyckel event and say hi. I'll do my best not to make it weird and probably fail, be prepared, lol.

Every new thing you post makes me feel like it's more and more statistically improbable that we aren't already friends in real life. We definitely aren't, but it's starting to feel more like a cosmic anomaly than a simple fact.

If anybody has a rec for either a critique of Sapolsky's book or just a book on the subject of free will by somebody who is within their bailiwick on the issue, I'd be interested.

000

I'm not a philosopher and can't pretend I have a rigorous critique, but my reaction to Sapolsky's earlier books about stress was "wow that's incredibly useful and insightful" and my reaction to this one was more like "geez man I'm not sure I follow, and that's pretty far out."

TBF I know a guy who almost died from celiac disease and had to have a lot of his intestines removed so it can be bad. I think people conflate it with "gluten intolerance" (which I suspect is legit in some instances and a neurotic thing in others). But by all appearances Ms. Woll is thriving, lol.

internally determined, and they've created their own set of byzantine rules to try to evaluate what work is "good" or "bad," and the agency is as catty and dysfunctional as the snake-pittiest university English department you can imagine.

dog shows, beauty pageants, figure skating, & certain parts of the fine arts worlds.) I know someone who worked for the Government Accountability Office, the function of which is to produce reports for congress, but they don't ANSWER to congress, so what has to go into the reports is entirely 2/

I'm not an academic but I have a longstanding theory that jobs and hobbies where there is little to no objective external measure of quality and what's "good" or "bad" depends largely on the opinions of other insiders make everyone a little crazy and some people a lot crazy. They're kind of random sizes but all pretty small. They found really tiny gold ones in Asia but it seems to me those are so small that they might be like little jewelry-sized "charm" versions of the bigger ones.

Maybe? I mean i definitely do want to wrap yarn around it too, it just looks like that would be fun. But they're made of kind of heavy and difficult-to-make metal, which seems like a lot of effort for a yarn holder.

That would make sense (and it's what I first thought too) but not all of them have holes you could make cord through, some of them have pin-sized holes.

Hypothesis, as a person who has occasionally stretched the truth for the sake of a laugh: They never actually dated but they knew each other existed, one (or both) of them claimed they'd dated because it's funnier that way, never expected anybody to actually ask for receipts, and now they're hiding.

All gas station pills can be gas station suppositories if you have vision.

It's absolutely going around, my mom and my kid both have it right now. It's pretty mild, they're both just kind of run down and my kid puked once but has otherwise felt OK.

TF is wrong with people?! (I mean actually, I know the answer to this question, but one still marvels at how clueless and incon.)

040

What TF were these used for? I just feel in my bones that it's going to be something that's really obvious when you know it and everyone will go "ohhhhhh OF COURSE" but I have no clue what it is. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_d...
