I believe As I Lay Dying was ALSO that year. For me it was just I hated all the characters and that sort of just repelled me from the book, when combined with-- .. evertyghing else I had to read that year. XD

Like. All Quiet On the Western Front *is* an important book about the horrors and senslesness of war. It is probably good for highschoolers to read that. You should not fucking follow that with Of Mice And Men. And then follow that with 1984. And then The Great Gatsby.

Yeah High School + being an overly empathetic person completely destroyed my ability to enjoy depressing stories. There was just too much depressing and in some cases outright *nihilistic* books.

God, I remember one year the reading list was-- (now I may be blurring some years together a bit, highschool was 25 years ago) All Quiet On the Western Front Of Mice And Men 1984 The Great Gatsby The Bluest eye back to back to back to back.

I really feel sometimes that he may be incapable of self-reflection and considering that perhaps he is wrong about something or misunderstood it. He always, always has to double down.
