An Article describing the way one education consultancy firm, Nous, is directly connected to the dismantling of multiple universities from Australia to Canada (and now UK). The Uniforum software they use for benchmarking was used @exeter.ac.uk Some gems quoted below: renthomas.ca/theres-a-nou... 1/4

Inside Britain's university crisisAs teaching staff face job loss, their bosses have netted pay rises and bought advice from a “vampiric” management consultancy, writes Prof. John Heathershaw of the University of Exeterdemocracyforsale.substack.com

What is the word one uses to describe a person who habitually says the opposite of what is true...? Our VC: Exeter has one of the largest humanities and social science depts and will continue to do so. Here is a helpful chart for where it is & what will happen. #DefendExeterUni @exeter.ac.uk

But of course it did. Because unless you literally open up the entire set of files/data, etc. on which you train any AI and open up how and what patterns are being recorded from which it is "learning" you will have precisely this! No black boxes--make it transparent and very carefully monitored.

The Breach

Ontario jails are using an AI tool that claims to predict prisoners’ behaviour. And it’s disproportionately placing Black prisoners in maximum security. An investigation by @desmondcole.bsky.social reveals the province knew the tool would discriminate against Black people—and used it anyway.

Congratulations to our new @britishacademy.bsky.social fellows. But also sobering as they point out when @exeter.ac.uk is simultaneously putting their jobs &those of a hundred others in humanities, arts and social sciences, The Academy's remit, under threat! #DefendExeterUni @exeterucu.bsky.social

@exeter.ac.uk management claims consultancy has begun for a compulsory redundancy process. @exeterucu.bsky.social has registered with the arbitration committee that the law requires proper data to be shared before such a process can begin. This is the data needed which we haven't been given.

Senior management @exeter.ac.uk "We are in serious financial trouble so we need to make these drastic cuts NOW, otherwise we face major deficits". The VC yesterday "We have a 1% surplus for this year, which is not enough so we need to make drastic cuts NOW". #DefendExeterUni @exeterucu.bsky.social

Here's a good write up of how private equity is destroying UK Higher ed now too after already doing a number in US and elsewhere. www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/politics/pol...

Private finance is strangling British educationMore money is being spent on education—but this isn’t always to the benefit of students, or the countrywww.prospectmagazine.co.uk

Yes to this, but make no mistake that the attacks on humanities & damage to HE is the confluence of ideologies, private equity, consultants, genocide-profiteers, senior management, media moguls and a desire to crush unions (often more well-represented amongst HASS academics).

I am not opposed to people leaving because that is what they want to do for their own well-being and have means to do so, BUT the problem with higher ed IS senior management & the millions they are scraping up top & investing in their stock portfolios with unnecessary expenses. #DefendExeterUni
