Case came dirty but I'm excited to dig into this. The games list has a few bangers! PD/freeware/shareware compilations have a bit of a sketchy reputation but tbh they may be a better representation of what computer gaming was like for most of us in the 90s and 00s than your Half-Lifes and shit.

Senkousya won! Genuinely excellent dungeon-crawling ARPG with deceptively thoughtful design. Really tight resource management and combat that emphasises spacing and patience. Very 'pure' dungeon crawl experience. Highly recommended if you like King's Field, Thunderdawn, or the like.

An old freeware Japanese ARPG called Senkousya came up on Discord recently. I was checking out the manual and found a link to the dev's website, which can be accessed on Wayback. There's a developer diary here! You'll need a way to deal with shift_JS encoding and preferably some Japanese to enjoy

the thing with reading so much about prehistory and antiquity lately is that I'll see some 12th century medieval shit and be like "oh that's quite recent actually."

Looking at some of the Japanese computer ports of Ultima IV and the visual differences in the opening are really interesting.

Reading the George Ainslie Hight translation of Grettis Saga and the introduction has this absolutely brutal aside omfg 💙📚

Thinking of playing the first Tomb Raider again. I really wish the rest of the series had followed in its footsteps; it's so much weirder and darker than everything else, including its remake. Just grows more and more haunted as you go until everything is made of blood. Fuckin all-timer.

I know I'm a decade late to the party, but Brigand: Oaxaca feels more like a total conversion mod than it does a commercial game and I mean that in an intensely positive way.

Barbarian Prince has lodged itself permanently in my brain. Solo RPG-ish board game where you set out seeking gold to hire an army great enough to retake your lost kingdom. It's a nightmare game that hates you but it was miles ahead of its time and, when it works, it's fucking beautiful.

The only piece of Mario media I had any exposure to as a child was the Bob Hoskins movie. When I finally played Mario Sunshine in 2003, I was really disappointed at how different it was. Why did they kidify Mario? This tells you everything you need to know about my taste in video games.

This what it was like when I was actually growing up. You didn't need to be "very wealthy" to access official discs but my area was "pretty poor" so it was full of stalls selling pirate games and stolen PS1s as well as "game cafes" that were just some guy's house.

I'm enjoying seeing people post their favorite physical games - I'm honestly jealous. Back then, those did not exist in Brazil unless you were VERY wealthy. We just had CD cases full of pirate discs. Super cheap, but no box, no manual... some were just regular CD-Rs... I have no attachment to them.
