Just recorded myself talking about Coltrane's recording of "My Favorite Things" for over an hour, some of it will get cut but we could be looking at my longest podcast episode so far

This thing that Josh Johnson and Gianmarco Soresi do of posting thousands of hours of standup on YouTube: I like it

Something I love about meeting a bunch of academics face to face who I previously only knew from their publications is that we're all 10-20 years older than our headshots. It's not out of vanity, it's just, what academic is shelling out for new headshots on a regular basis?

@andrewhickey.500songs.com @rebelmusicteach.bsky.social Okay wait how did the two of you get connected up? Through me or independently of me?

I have zero emotional investment in the Odyssey but I did read Emily Wilson's review and she is a heck of a great film critic

I was delighted to discover that the prolific philosopher of music education Gareth Dylan Smith also put beats under the Pathetique Symphony. I had this idea independently of him. Whose take is better? Here's Gareth's: austinaleegarethdylansmith.bandcamp.com/album/beetho...

Going from three weeks with my in-laws to a massive international conference is funny. My wife's family is kind and welcoming but that time together is very much Not About Me. But then the conference experience is very much About Me.

"Imagine how many artists, theaters, choruses, literary magazines, and concerts you could bankroll with the 37.5 billion dollars that the war in Iran has apparently already cost." Yes imagine! open.substack.com/pub/thelmaan...

Oof this post conference crash is harder than usual, it came right after three weeks with my in laws, it was long and intense, joyful for sure but a lot of feelings generally, plus then mild travel drama and associated lorazepam hangover, this is the most useless I have been in a while

The morning after a mammoth conference and I'm glad my to-do list isn't urgent because I am knackered

Okay! That's a wrap on ISME 2026. I did my pop theory and aural skills session and it was packed, standing room only. It's a hot topic! People want to be doing blues, rock and hip-hop in theory class, or they are already doing it but need more resources! Lot of positive energy here.

Session before mine is a good one: Seth Adams, Gaute Storsve and Andreas Berg talking about how you should grade students' creative work. The ideal answer would be: let's not grade that stuff! Subjective feedback is the right way to go! But we have to give grades, so.
