I've actually wondered about a total merger of sorts. CONMEBOL's interest in US venues (and $$), plus the fact that World Cup expansion might mean "Oops, all the South American teams qualified!", might make it at least 1% viable, though it would help US/Mexico a lot more than anyone from CONMEBOL.

The quality difference and the massive resulting stylistic difference are definitely challenging. You face low block after low block, and then in maybe your biggest match of a four-year cycle you’re basically playing a different sport.
