1/2 Today's new @equitablegrowth.bsky.social report offers a better way to measure the national debt: consider the debt-to-wealth ratio alongside debt-to-GDP, and a clearer path emerges for how policymakers should respond. equitablegrowth.org/research-pap...

The debt-to-wealth ratio: A missing lens on the U.S. government's fiscal capacityWhy scaling the national debt by what the country owns—not just what it earns in a year—reshapes the debate over how much we owe and who could help pay it down.equitablegrowth.org

U.S. debt held by the public just topped 100% of GDP, and CBO says it'll break the WWII-era record (106%) before 2030. But measure debt against total private wealth instead, and it's only ~half its 1945 peak. A thread on why the yardstick matters. 🧵

🧵 New tariffs taking effect this morning represent a deepening of this administration’s strategy of trade chaos and are a threat to U.S. workers and the economy under a thin justification of opposing forced labor.

Early care & education services are spatially differentiated. Using cell-phone mobility data, we measure worker & consumer commutes in a novel way, at the provider level. Great working with @gabriellepepin.bsky.social, @jborowsky.bsky.social & Liz Davis. research.upjohn.org/cgi/viewcont...

1/4 While we commemorated (or avoided celebrations of) America 250, another anniversary passed: a year ago on July 4, the One Big “Beautiful” Bill Act became law. We don’t have to project its impact on people or economic growth anymore, as the evidence comes in: equitablegrowth.org/the-one-big-...

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, one year later: Parsing the evidence on the law’s consequences so farOne year after the One Big Beautiful Bill Act was passed, research shows that its cuts to social programs negatively impact U.S. families.equitablegrowth.org

🧵 Twin decisions from the Supreme Court this week could shake the U.S. economy by eroding confidence in federal policymaking. While SCOTUS rightly blocked the firing of Fed Governor Lisa Cook (for now), its removal of protections for other agency leaders could be disastrous.

Washington Center for Equitable Growth

Today, SCOTUS upheld a lower court’s order preventing President Trump from removing Federal Reserve Board Governor Lisa Cook without due process, reaffirming longstanding protections for the central bank’s independence. Read our full response below 🔗: equitablegrowth.org/press/equita...

I've got lots of new stuff on income inequality today. First, I've updated @equitablegrowth.bsky.social's U.S. Inequality Tracker with new BEA data for 2024. That data shows the top 10% share of income tying its previous record in the life of the data (2000-2024)

Hot consumption reading today, 2.1% yoy increase adjusted for inflation. Why is consumption still increasing as real wages and real incomes fall? Short answer: the path from income to consumption is complicated. I read the tea leaves for @equitablegrowth.bsky.social here. Summary below.

Personal Income in the United States nudges up in May but is down 0.76 percent in the past 6 monthsPersonal Income nudged up slightly in May but is trending down over the past 6 months, which could be a worrying sign for the U.S. economy.equitablegrowth.org

Here’s my talk at @equitablegrowth.bsky.social titled, "A Grid New Deal: AI, Energy, and Equitable Growth". Three priorities: People: Public capacity to deliver clean electrification Policy: Align rules  Investment: Public & private capital to double the grid equitablegrowth.org/the-united-s...

The United States can simultaneously foster an equitable AI boom and a clean energy economyEquitable Growth event convened experts on AI and the clean energy transition, discussing how the rising adoption of emerging tech may affect the environment, economic growth, and inequality.equitablegrowth.org

For years, Equitable Growth pushed for the government to track GDP disaggregated by income, so we can see who benefits from GDP growth. While these results weren't what we were hoping for from an inequality perspective, we’re thrilled Americans now have better data to understand the economy.

New BEA data show economic growth in 2025 was uneven, with incomes for the bottom 20% falling behind. Amid policy changes and rising inflation, inequality in the United States remains historically high. Read more ⬇️
