“Dayflow’s open-source models also perform all of their processing on each user’s individual computer…appealing to those who don’t want to send their data to the cloud for privacy reasons.” The big AI companies will (& should) be toast. Let’s make sure they don’t toast the planet too.

On my way out the door for a few days and haven't listened yet, but it's @billmckibben.bsky.social, so this will be essential, cogent, and probably even encouraging. If my phone consents, I'll listen to it on my way to the coast!

So, I finally did a TED talk, and it got released today. I seem to have been quite intense, but I'm grateful they left in my Trump joke. www.ted.com/talks/bill_m...

You know what this ISN'T? An LLM. Once more for the folks in the back: nearly all of the actually useful, genuinely promising things that AI can do for us have nothing to do with LLMs & planet-devouring data centers. Hope, not hype. Serving us, not serving us up to Big Tech. @sciam.bsky.social

Has this made the rounds here yet? This may be the most insane post I've ever read. "I don’t think you understand what ChatGPT Voice unlocks. I went on a 4hr hike yesterday. Through the northern California redwoods. Got more work done in those 4 hours...then I do in 8 hours at my desk."

Alex Finn (@AlexFinn) on XI don’t think you understand what ChatGPT Voice unlocks I went on a 4 hour hike yesterday. Through the northern California redwoods. Just went to The Odyssey, and enjoyed it...but I may never go to the theater again: there was a full half hour of ads beforehand (about half regular ads, then previews). After $27 tickets, and before a 3-hour movie? Are they TRYING to alienate folks?

100% this: "Real intelligence is inextricable from organic embodiment, from being a feeling organism passing through time and space shaped in every moment by its needs, fears, desires...“Artificial intelligence” is a highly consequential misnomer."

Seriously, @nytimes.com? You think an experimental psychologist is the person to listen to on data centers & the environment? Someone who considers the impacts of a person asking AI a question, rather than the impacts of massive new gas infrastructure for a dumb, inefficient, water-guzzling tech?

So uhhh - the numbers are out and they're not pretty. Margins down, capex up, so despite a revenue beat... shares continue to slide. Updates at CNBC - we'll listen to the call so you don't have to! www.cnbc.com/2026/07/22/t...

Listening to @edzitron.com's newest pod, and it's very clear that we need to instill some loss aversion into banks, because if they feared loss more than they relished gains....we wouldn't be here now. Sadly, we live in an age when Pangloss has beaten up Cassandra and hidden her in the basement.

The air quality is only at "moderate", my nose doesn't register it as smoky, the windows are closed & the AC and air purifier on, but my eyeballs KNOW how much smoke is in the sky, and they object. Ugh!

It "calls for a 5k-long causeway to be built across the estuary shallows to deep water, where VLCC-class tankers with room for 2 million barrels of oil would dock...wedged between the port & the Fraser River, would be a...tank farm with 15 tanks, each holding 6.5 million barrels of oil." Just: no.

Just started The AI Mirror…and I’m hooked: “AI tools reflect the values of the wealthy postindustrial societies that build them. These are the very values that have brought us to our current heights of scientific ingenuity, but also to the 6th mass extinction and the brink of planetary devastation.”

Hey @governorferguson.bsky.social, maybe it's time we regulated the facilities causing this catastrophic increase in emissions, and threat to our water supplies?

Troublemakers

Looks like some troublemakers showed up at the @microsoft.com convo at Climate Week... ...because Microsoft has INCREASED emissions by 80% since 2020. Is that the plan for Washington State? Businesses that fan the flames on our wildfires, droughts, and heatwaves? This is bullshit.

I mean, I know that my particular bluesky feed is not what most people are seeing here, let alone what most people see on the news or in the papers. But. Aren't they sensing a theme? Some kind of strand connecting the fires and floods and heatwaves and wars?
