You're not forbidden from loving things that heavily center men and sideline women. I'm extremely fond of the movie WALL-E even though it features romance tropes worthy of criticism. If you wanted what Nolan's Odyssey provided for you, then to you, it's a good film. It just wasn't Wilson's good.

Thus... all the blowback to her observations, a lot of the people saying "how horribly rude to say she would feel ashamed to write this script considering this director man just made her translation famous" feels... honestly like they really should read her review again, even if they liked the film.

Greek myths are hard to adapt in the modern era because they're very intensely about gender and patriarchy and misogyny and the relation of men to women in ways that a modern, post-feminist audience often struggles to sit with, and the lack of those themes is what much of Wilson's review is about.

...that we all have to debate over Emily Wilson's opinion. I think it's neat she has an opinion, I think everyone should try to understand what they do or do not like about Nolan's Odyssey, and I like reading the words of a woman who is confident enough to opine precisely what she thinks.

"Good movies" do not exist in any sort of objective measure of reality. A "good" movie is, at best, a movie that receives a strong consensus of praise, but what's praised can change, as well as why. Many films that flop at the box office or receive backlash upon release go on to become classics...

One of the things that "good" can also mean is "morally righteous and socially acceptable", too, so there's a lot of peer pressure on people to curate their opinions to only enjoy what everyone else approves of, which, as the guy who loved the Canto Bight scene everyone hates, I think is very silly.

I don't really like the idea that "you can like it even if its' not a good movie", not because it's not true, but mostly because I'm being a little pedant who thinks that mass appeal slop and transcendent high art are both "good" but for different reasons, because "good" can mean a lot of things.

...because it entertained your children ages nine, five and three equally without being unpleasant for you to sit through, because it perfectly adapts a classic story you love for a new medium, or because it takes that story and unpacks, deconstructs, and transforms it into something entirely new.

...because it features something you've never seen before, because it articulates a message with skill and pathos, because it resonates with a minority group's experience, because it showcases technological innovations, because it exceeds what is usually possible on a small budget...

Like... what does "good" even mean? You mean something when you say it, but it's likely not what I understand when I hear it. A "good" movie can be "good" because it's fun to watch with friends, because it's entertaining to watch while stoned, because it makes you feel intense terror or sorrow...

Honestly, all this attack on Fauci has done is make me really like him. Seems like one of those folks who genuinely care about the people around him, and I truly wish the world could be run by the people who try to make things better for others, not the ones who will hurt folks to gain power.

...I think history will remember Anthony Fauci exactly the same way. The men persecuting him will not be well thought of, and the ghoulish opposition to the health advice he championed to save lives will be scoffed at. Scientists who devote their lives to sparing us disease are loved for a reason.

Despite that, now he's being demonized for it, the way governments have demonized every doctor pitted against a public health outbreak for fighting back against a culture that led to human deaths, like Edward Jenner or John Snow. History remembers those men fondly, and call me schmaltzy, but...
