Why is smoke from #WoodsideFire in Sonoma County so bad from a small blaze? Winds are being channeled through the Russian River and Petaluma Gap, bringing smoke to the Hwy 101 corridor. A shallow marine layer ~1,500ft w/ hot air above cold air prevents smoky winds from mixing w/ the free atmosphere

Definitely accurate. Was listening to scanner at the time when the second fire broke out at Ocean Cove Campground. Very windy day along the North Coast! Here are the two incidents per Sonoma County log, via pulse point.
Daniel SwainIf the latest FIRIS perimeter for #WoodsideFire is accurate, this would be one of the stranger fire footprints & trajectories I've seen. Under strong NWly winds parallel to coastline, it appears fire has spotted *over oceanic coves* & into downwind forest...twice!! Whoa.
The Woodside Fire north of Fort Ross prompted a closure of Highway 1. It was 50 acres as of 3:30 p.m. and is burning through heavy timber. Air quality was plummeting in parts of Sonoma County as wind gusts up to 30 mph pushed the smoke inland. #CAwx #CAfire

Scott SistekThe weather is not only about to pull off a rare feat in the Pacific Northwest, but perhaps a counter-intuitive one as well. #Seattle's upcoming rain on Saturday could actually make the wildfire problems in Eastern Washington *worse*: emeraldcityweather.com/seattle-augu... #wawx
Bay Area microclimates could soon produce their most pronounced temperature contrasts since 2024 as a heat wave builds across the interior valleys while the coast remains mild. The temperature difference between SF and inland cities is anticipated to be 25-30F, perhaps more, Friday-Sunday.
A long-duration heat wave will hit California in early August, just as the state enters what is historically the peak of its fire season. Rapid drying will make vegetation more flammable than any point so far this year, with near-record levels of energy available for any fire that does break out.

The warmest winter on record — and corresponding lack of snow — followed by a deepening drought have made Oregon's wildfires particularly difficult to fight. A look at why the state's wildfires have gone so crazy this July: www.statesmanjournal.com/story/news/w...
A long-duration California heat wave is expected to begin Friday, bringing the state its hottest weather in at least two years. The heat wave is shaping up to have two phases: an initial blast focusing on Central and Southern California, then a second peak that encompassing nearly the entire state.
