There's a fundamental asymmetry to these kind of bad faith dynamics. People operating in good faith, trying to generate good outcomes int he world, lose to people who are trying to manipulate for power and status, when those people aren't sufficiently constrained.

The gov was acting on the best available knowledge of what was happening at the time, whereas the other side was searching for any plausible narrative to undermine them.

When COVID started getting political in NZ, the opposition would was testing what bad faith narratives would allow them to destabilise the government. At the time Jacinda Ardern made the point that "they don't have to be right about everything".

I would agree, but knowing which are the right brainers intuiting, and which are bad faith actors trying to substitute their preferred framing is the challenging part.

I like it, it's good imo. Like the system had dependencies, and they flow through faithfully. That's user choice at work, nothing is being imposed top down.

Seems to me that our governance system is being challenged and renegotiated. We didn't start it, or break with precedents. But we can follow suit. And I think we'll have to. It's not the cleanest way to do things, but better to aim for a good outcome than to just surrender to the inevitable.

That has been the recent pattern. I guess what im trying to imply, is that this will likely be something that has to be forced through, and maintained, until it's established and has legs of its own. And done in a way that can't be easily reversed. Or, we'll have to accept the inevitable decline.

But for it to work, it's going to require some substantial projects that put someone who's thinking like this in charge. And they'll need a base of knowledge and people to support/implement. And once you’re generating good outcomes, you can start expanding the processes/methods outwards.

Rather, it’ll be a response to some sort of crisis. Something will happen (say, maybe someone closes the strait of Hormuz and kicks of an energy crisis), and we’ll need to seize the moment to embark on a period of adaption.

Couldn't agree more - I would read the in-depth write up. I'm interested in how we transition from where we are, to what you describe. I no longer think we'll come to some sort of consensus and implement something like this in a non partisan manner.
