Did you know that volcanoes make glass? 🌋🍾 Two of the most iconic volcanic products – obsidian and lauoho o Pele (also called Pele’s hair) – are composed of volcanic glass that represents quenched silicate melt. New research from the department shed light on these mysterious volcanic formations!

From 24–26 March, several members of the department attended the annual Geochemistry Group Research in Progress (GGRiP) meeting at the University of Bristol. 🎉Jenny, Hanna-Riia, and Icelandic collaborators were recently awarded an Icelandic Energy Research Fund Grant, which will support the continued operation of the Durham-led seismic network that has been monitoring earthquakes around volcanoes in the central Icelandic highlands for a further 2 years.

After 2 months of collecting seaweed from South Georgia, the West Antarctic Peninsula and the Weddell Sea, for carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis, PhD student Freya Alldred is finally back from the Southern Ocean. Fieldwork was supported by Viking expeditions.
