This is how social welfare works. Yes taxpayers pay but the payback for them is that they get to live in a society where everyone gets to eat and thus have fewer beggars on the streets. Normal people see that as a good thing and how a tax system should work.

So people who support human rights and freedom of speech are just a ‘group’? I had hoped we were a sizeable proportion of humanity - the majority even.
