In my linguistics class, they told us that English is 40% German, 40% French, 10% Latin and Greek, 10% Scandinavian (from the Vikings, you know), and 10% use words borrowed from other languages due to colonization (eg, curry, bungalow). Yes, that adds up to 110% — which is the point.

And then they throw in some Celtic languages and yoink bits of languages from around the world along the way. The result: a language where there are usually about 10 different ways to say something, but when it comes to writing, you sit at your desk for 20 minutes trying to think of one 🤣 #amwriting
