(20 years at the absolute outside; the theory behind the transformation pipeline stuff is absolutely 20 years old; my first crack at a linked data browser though i think was 2011)

again i think more than half of the 20 years it took to ship this project: • putting it off for years because i thought it was too ambitious/not sufficiently differentiated • trying to get support for a thing that was too alien for any of my interlocutors to imagine without actually seeing it

vibes are very similar in canada (where we happen to have a grocery oligopoly)

anyway it's just dawning on me that i finally have that now

like i want fine-grained addressable content that is ready to go for whatever manipulation i feel like doing to it

specifically what i want out of a CMS is to not have to waste my life ETLing my own content just so i can do some cute little effect or gizmo or whatever

so amusingly my personal site has actually been waiting since around this time of year, 18 years ago, for a cms that exhibits the requisite behaviour

like the thing that kicked off what is now intertwingler was an attempt on my part to create a policy document for web development as a dense hypermedia artifact: doriantaylor.com/policy/resou... basically the experience was so onerous i gave up and just started writing ordinary essays

so, grant sanderson was working at khan academy making videos about calculus and linear algebra, and he started writing what eventually became manim (manim.community) to create the expository content

another sort of mini paradigm shift is that i've been treating intertwingler like ruby on rails relative to basecamp (where senseatlas.net is the analogue of basecamp), but i realized the other day that's actually a lot more like the relationship between 3blue1brown and manim…

worth remarking that the problems intertwingler solves in are still as much problems in 2026 as they were in 2006

in other words we're looking at mere weeks before a project i started sketching out 20* years ago finally has a release candidate (* the dense hypermedia work was kicked off in 2008 but it relies on an architecture i originally sketched out in 2006)

anyway, last night i completed one of the few remaining parts that had yet to be implemented because it was (as you can see by the graph) dependent on other things being done the rest of those outstanding things are kinda little chore-y bits
