Federal agents continue to arrest people at or near Chicagoland courts. Rapid responders report that earlier today, ICE took one person near the Kankakee County, IL courthouse. Photos & video shared online corroborate, showing agents placing a man into a Ford (with no front plate) near the court.

“Are you next???”

As things wind down, organizers collect the tombstone signs. The Broadview protest happens every Saturday at noon, but I asked an organizer if there will be another march like this one. “If more people get killed,” they say, plainly, pursing their lips.

I’ve heard a variety of jokes, insults, and impassioned pleas from the protest zone over the last six months. Also the most emphatic “fuck yous” I’ve ever heard in my life.

Protester to local cop: “Serve and protect, right? Serve and protect the rapists inside…Oh god your kids are never gonna talk to you again…you can die cold and alone, gasping for air.”

Fenced in—and under constant watch—by the local police’s “designated protest zone,” protesters revert back to their usual shouting at passing fed vehicles and agents coming in/out of the facility.

After looping back to the “protest zone” a local Hispanic aftercare volunteer speaks: “I need you to choose what time you’re gonna spend on with that fight. Some of us don’t have the option to just walk away. Because of who I was born to, I don’t have a choice to just give up on this fight.”

Marching past the Harvard St approach to the facility, where protesting is officially banned: “This is where Broadview Police works with ICE…This is the gate that breaks loose, where all these agents come out to murder our neighbors.”

As marchers cross the street, a driver holds up a camouflage-patterned cap out their window in solidarity.

Among the recited names are separate and independent calls of “identity unknown” and “John/Jane Doe.”

Two weeks ago, the same march was held, with the body count at 118. As of July 20th, it’s 276. This number comes from independent documenter Christian Kunz on Facebook and Substack.

Near the ICE facility in Broadview, IL, protesters just marched again in memory of those killed by immigration enforcement. Marchers hold tombstone signs labeled with, and recite the names of over 200 dead since 2018.

Per the police shooting in Madison, WI today, this bears repeating: ICE, CBP, local cops; their violence is all connected. ICE represents an escalation of that violence to be sure. But we wouldn't be here here without years and years of collectively tolerating "regular" cops killing people.
