this one is more arboreal than your standard antlion, with the larvae mostly living in dry tree holes (or gopher tortoise burrows further south, apparently!). here in piedmont VA i tend to see the adults resting on tree trunks or on a building near woods (like this one)

Spectacular catch on the 1st day of #FlySchool2026 by student Sangjin Han! This massive timber fly was flying around the lobby of the Soltis Center last night. At over 2"/5 cm this is the largest live fly I've ever seen 😳 Larvae bore in wood. Amazing! 🥰 #Pantophthalmidae: #Pantophthalmus Costa Rica
