Wait, your left, or mine ?

Up until now, there were no other known copies - the existence of printed engravings tells us something about the circulation of its content.

Hunting for sources sometimes yield new exciting results - and sometimes an entry that sounds promising is mildly disappointing, as the published version of the book is already widely available. At least the illustrations are prettier, and with a better quality than in most online digitizations

As enticing as it sounds - unfortunately, it "only" contains an incomplete copy of the Libro de las Grandezas de la Espada by Luis Pacheco de Narváez, probably copied from the 1600 edition.

As part of my contributions to the PALAS project for the Fédération Française des #AMHE, I identified, and ordered the digitization of the Cod. 2147, which we received recently. It's now available in the PALAS collection wiki.ffamhe.fr/Lisboa_Bibli...

Scans should be available on the Prague museum website within the year - hopefully as soon as June. this is an important piece of French fencing history, and I'm glad to be part of its re-discovery.

I tipped off the PALAS project about the Prague manuscript, and a year late we got scans of "De la théorie ou science de l'espee seule" (40 chapters, legible French script). Olivier Dupuis is currently working on a transcription and will talk about it during his HEMAC conference.

The Rennes library’s viewer isn’t the easiest to use, so I painstakingly compiled the images of Ms. 2348 into a cleaner PDF. Both the transcription and the PDF are available on the FFAMHE wiki recently updated : 🔗 wiki.ffamhe.fr/Ren%C3%A9_Bret #OpenAccess #FencingResources

A few years ago, Ms. 2348 in the Rennes library was digitized by the PALAS project. It’s a 1683 copy by Charles Robin d'Estréans of an earlier sword & dagger treatise by René Bret de La Fresnaye—a Parisian master of arms. It was transcribed by ELSAMHE in 2022.

Another interesting find was a catalog entry for Ms. XG 21 in the Knihovna Národního muzea — attributed to "La Fresnaye." If you’re into 17th-century French rapier (you freak), that name should ring a bell.

The conference will be a presentation of the Mars & Sol collection we co-direct. Its principles, its goals and its opportunities.

The workshop will deal with 16th century duelling according to Viggiani and dall'Agocchie using the single sword.

Excellent choice of book.

You can download the free e-book on the website of Les éditions #Solstices, or pre-order a physical copy on our crowdfunding page : www.helloasso.com/associations...

For instance #Gunterrodt illustrates his dussack section with fencers in "Turkish" garment. (You guessed it, this was all a setup to talk about Gunterrodt again)
