With Kalamu ya Salaam, Jim helped co-direct Students at the Center, a New Orleans-based writing project that used writing as a medium for high school students to reflect on and improve their schools and neighborhoods and mentor younger students.

We ended with a total of 1,118 valid and verified signatures from the total amount we collected, equating to a 91% acceptance rate. We collected 3.47 times what we needed (required amount was 250).

They showed up to make a difference. They showed up when the task was hard. They showed up because they believe that Louisiana’s 1st Congressional District deserves better representation and that belief is what fuels this entire campaign.

From knocking on doors across the district, calling voters who have never heard our name before, to designing graphics, writing policy, researching endorsements, and keeping this campaign running behind the scenes — our interns have done it all.

Due to congressional redistricting under SB 121/Act 2 (May 29, 2026), Terrebonne Parish was split between Congressional Districts 1 and 3, so now picked up the eastern half of Terrebonne Parish. We also continue to have parts of Lafourche Parish.

Disability rights aren’t abstract for me. These rights are personal to me because of my family and because of the kids and families I have served in the classroom for the past 17 years. It shapes how I think about our campaign and our policy decisions.

Today, that promise of the ADA and other legislation for people with disabilities is under threat from federal DOJ rollbacks to proposed safety-net cuts to the dismantling of the federal Department of Education. I’m not backing down on this fight.
