Thank you, that makes sense! So shorts are like the new top of the marketing funnel 😄

Yup, I agree! A shocking number of trailers for narrative games fail to create a narrative within the trailer. Oftentimes the dialogue shown functionally says: “the game has dialogue” rather than being there to tell a story 🙃

It’s why my new mantra/advice is: “Give what people need to know, not what you want to show.” I think a LOT of people are making the trailer with themselves in mind, not the audience in mind. Which is how you get indulgent “cinematic” intros which are pretty but usually not informative.

I do the hovering too because most trailers just aren’t good at getting to the point. This is just the new means of clicking past logos and slow environment shots. I think most of my editing advice is still relevant to solving these problems because most folks still don’t get the basics right.

Interviewers often ask me this when they want to know “the future of trailers.” I’ve always felt there’s going to be a place for trailers even though shorts are more of a thing now. But I don’t do those jobs, so I’m curious to hear how it actually is when your job is skimming through tons of games.

Big Walk has brilliant use of intentional friction to create fun scenarios. Only problem was us figuring out the quality of our microphone input volumes. Otherwise, a lovely hour spent which I look forward to continuing later 😄

Gotta double feature it with Totoro to recreate the original screenings 🥲

I looooove the progression to the moody dark lighting in the library and how it enhances the drama 😍

The way I think of it is: Even if there were ANY benefit to using AI (I'm staunchy opposed), it's not worth poisoning and throwing away your entire reputation and credibility—which take YEARS to establish.

That's not bad. I think along those lines, something like: "So... you don't know for sure if [thing you looked up] is true?" might work 🤔

Yeah, same. In these cases they were people I knew wouldn’t be talking about chat in that context. So this might be a thing amongst non-gamers 🫠

020

Yeah, same for me! But in these contexts it’s been from non-gamers. Which is what made me realize they weren’t using the word in a Twitch context 👀

Related: I’ve sometimes been in conversations where someone said “I asked Chat” and I think I need to find a snarky, but friendly reply to undercut the idea of ever using ChatGPT 🫠
