Its a great post, but the consider the possibility that the overall context here is that we gave fucks about people, and got smarter at doing that in a bunch of different ways, of which -lead- is one, important, example. For some reason, some people are mad about that, and seek to undo it.

You’re right that people block in order to punish ideological enemies. I wish disagreement on the Internet had a more respectful culture.

Nothing is actually silent on Bluesky if you have the right apps. I get notified about every block. (I do appreciate when crazy people self moderate.)\ I think a lot of people block who ought to mute. Muting is generally better if your disagreement is ideological and not related to abuse.

IANAL, but the prosecution wants a “without prejudice” dismissal because it gives them the option of refiling the charge in the future … say if new information surfaces. A defendant would want a “with prejudice” dismissal because that would prohibit the DOJ from ever refiling the charge.

Math is an example - LLM’s can’t do math, so under the hood these things have a python interpreter and prompting that tells them when to write code to evaluate a quantitative question. Same with image interpretation and generation. Its an AI system. The LLM is just a component.

Part of whats happening is that you aren’t just buying an LLM from these companies anymore - they are selling complex software systems with many different types of internal components and prompting that ties it all together, but they aren’t explaining everything that is going on under the hood.

You’re right, and to be clear - there is no presently imaginable scenario in which there would be an American consensus about this. Trump is pushing on the “Overton Window” with this, and thats infuriating, but its long long way from concensus.

I personally don’t think pretextual searches meet the bar for “reasonable.” We’ll see what happens with this case.

That isn’t what they are claiming. The argument is that the 4th Amendment only prohibits “unreasonable” searches, and searches at the border are “presumptively reasonable” due to long standing historical practice of searching bags at places like Castle Garden.

I’m not defending the idea of a Canadian nuclear program, but there is almost nothing that would create a political consensus for US military intervention in Canada. Trump’s rhetoric is way out of step, and of course some people follow his lead, but its as if he is saying that the earth is flat.

Things like this are why warrants are good. If there really is probable cause to suspect this person of a crime that was presented to a judge, at least that provides SOME reassurance, however weak it may be, that the search isn’t purely politically motivated. Border searches suggest the opposite.

Most people’s politics involve wanting greater freedom for themselves while also wanting to control other people with rules. They organize into groups with others who share the same interests, and everything they “think” about politics is a rationalization of those interests.
