Am I right to think that at this point that China is doing more to combat global climate change than Europe? Not that either have a particularly wonderful story to tell. But Europe's increasingly nostalgic politics doesn't leave much space for the future.

UK politics has generally preferred to avoid the question of permanent UK-EU negotiations as too awkward and talk instead about minor variations we may have on regulation or trade. Whether that can change is Labour's question of the next two years. Place your bets...

The central question on the UK's relations with the EU that has never really been faced - given that negotiations will be crucial for all manner of different policy issues (not just trade) - from what position do you want to approach those.

Clearly there are going to be differences between companies. But ASML for example want I think to maintain their monopoly position unsurprisingly more than they want growth.

Or maybe to be more fair, Europe and the US are still hungry for growth in services, but in terms of manufacturing far less so, and this presents Chinese companies with an opportunity they have been happy to take. And the latter is aligned with government unlike the former.

I simply do not buy the argument that China has perfected government-led industrial policy and so the EU and US must follow. Sorry, but I think this is more a story of which companies are hungriest for growth, and that isn't ours any more. www.foreignaffairs.com/united-state...
