I mean, the only entity that can mandate a “binding” referendum is Congress as they are the ones who have the final say. Congress could make PR a state or give them independence today if they wanted to. Of course as a matter of principle it’s best to have a vote which is the process AK and HI had.

It’s funny how a lot of centrist and leftist pundits don’t want to accept inflation was the big concern in 2024 for different reasons.

I don’t think voluntarily annexation which gives them voting representation in Congress and the ability to chose the president that governs them is the same as enslavement. Either way, I can’t speak them. It should be their choice at the end of the day.

I’m not sure this is even all that true tbh. IIRC, I thinks there’s polling showing those who live in the mainland are more supportive of statehood than those living in the island. Still majority/plurality support for statehood regardless.

If a majority want independence, then it should be granted to them. If a majority don’t want independence (which the referendum shows, only a minority want it), then it shouldn’t be forced on them.
