So why all the giant flood of negative press, this close to a midterm? Because the DC consultants that usually make all the money are not making that money this cycle and they have DC hill rags on speed dial. Ken hasn't been perfect but he has raised the money and made the reforms.

I'm a political focus group vendor and I simply have never seen the level of research spending by state parties and state legislative committees that I've seen from Dems this cycle. I can't prove that that's because of Martin's decisions but it would be awful coincidental if it weren't.

A few things on this Hill piece: 1) Rufus Gifford was the finance chair of the campaign that left the DNC with $18 million in debt to pay off 2) the DNC is raising record money for an out-of-WH midterm cycle 3) state parties are seeing huge dollar investments. thehill.com/homenews/cam...

Of course they do and if you can't possibly ascribe a positive morality to that then you can cynically claim it's because Black people tend to be reliable voters for more establishment Dem candidates but you can't argue they don't care

The point of a primary is for all of your coalition to have a say in the nominee, and this sounds an awful lot like you want to take Black people for granted without giving them a voice because you don't like what they say

Oh, it'll be important in the same way that Iowa was important, but also, how many times have we seen surprises in Iowa that peter out later? Now South Carolina is kind of in that boat.

The hook isn't a "mislead" it's stating very clearly that South Carolina wasn't picked first specifically to engender a centrist nominee, which is the accusation being widely floated. That may happen, but it isn't the goal of the design.

Virginia is an early state but its Black population isn't even close to what South Carolina's is. The Dem primary in Virginia is going to be dominated by educated urban liberals.

11/11 all in all, it's a great calendar if you actually think about it as opposed to doing anti-intellectual teeth-gnashing anti-DNC conspiracy theories. A progressive candidate has a greater chance under this calendar than under any other in recent memory.

10/x So even if a candidate doesn't do well in South Carolina, there's a definite chance to recover. Let's say, for example, that AOC runs, but doesn't do well in South Carolina. Well, Nevada is right around the corner, and maybe a candidate like AOC cleans up there. Losing SC doesn't doom you.

MD applied for an early state waiver but competition was fierce. The DNC kept the early states that had traditionally had waivers (SC, NV, NH) but then added three more this cycle, and a deep-blue state was not going to be one of the additional ones chosen. So we ended up with NM, MI and VA.

9/x the DNC early state calendar now features New Hampshire, Michigan, New Mexico, and Virginia: a diversity of heavily Latino states, heavy union density states, white working class states, AAPI communities, and even highly educated liberals. It's six states representing the whole Dem coalition.

8/x plus, and this is the big one: instead of only four states in the early window before Super Tuesday, now there are SIX, which means plenty of opportunities for other candidates to recover from South Carolina even if they had a poor showing there. In addition to NV, which is 2nd on the calendar,
