I have always loved this graph type from the NYT. It’s basically The Needle but with a ton more information packed into it

IMO, watch the series, then read the final trilogy. The TV series is a really good adaptation, and then the writing has certainly improved by the last 3 books (that weren't adapted). And it moves away from James and Noir Hat guy towards the much more awesome female characters
