Medical historian specializing in alcohol & drug policy at BrockUniversity. Danmalleck.ca Allergic to acronyms, fyi. And jargon. Posts do not represent my workplace. Often they just represent a current fever dream.

In my ongoing effort to learn Mandarin I am beginning to dissect individual characters. One of the things I find interesting is how modern words are constructed. For example the word for television (电视) combines electricity (电) with god/ to worship (礻)and to see (见). I'll just leave that here.

So I guess private run prisons who contract out their detainees to do unpaid labour is not considered forced labour?

Brilliant and nuanced editorial cartoon from David Parkins in today's Globe and Mail (22 July 2026). Look closely at the details in the jalopy.

Open the floodgates! I'm not about to buy US cheese or booze so bans or government restrictions are immaterial. I suspect many of my compatriots feel the same. After all there is no government restriction on travelling south but many of us have ceased to do it.

Happy 4th to my American friends! If it's any comfort, 248.5 years between being ruled by mentally ill tyrants is a pretty good run.

I saw this announcement and thought "boy I'd like to be part of that pub" ... but then realized I was (I had forgotten the title of the book)! Congratulations to Nils, David, and Joe, and all the contributors. It looks great and given the quality of the contributors, I'm sure it is brilliant

@theresthistory.bsky.social hey guys when are you going to do a series on prohibition. You've touched on it a few times but it was a pretty big movement and not just in the USA.

44 years ago last night we were sitting around the dining table and my parents suggested we go to Ottawa in the morning to see the constitution repatriated. They woke us at 4AM, bundled us into our van, and drove the seven hours to Ottawa so we could see history. I call that good parenting. #Canada
