Sounds like a direct refutation to the common refrain that we can’t have strong environmental standards in the EU 🇪🇺 because that would harm our competitiveness… Maybe #ETS reform and scaling back climate ambition isn’t so smart after all.
Chris BatailleThere's literally a case to be made here that environmental controls were part and package of the Chinese industry's evolution to much higher efficiency, lower costs, and global competitiveness, the opposite of the pollution haven hypothesis.
Funny how that works... Bureaucracy is very bad for EU 🇪🇺 competitiveness when it's about restoration of nature, but more paperwork is totally fine when it's about free allocation of permits ("benchmark-based"), international credits ("high quality") and carbon removal ("strict safeguards")... 🤷
