He's an obscure figure in Chicago but for people of a certain vintage in Northwest Indiana, Frank Kollintzas was a big deal, and the sidewalks-for-votes scandal was a major thing for years. From an era when East Chicago politicians wore grooves in the sidewalk up to the Hammond federal courthouse.

Every Deep Purple fan like myself has to figure out whether their favorite kind of Deep Purple song is I’ve Got a Car, Space Adventure or Love Song with Unfortunate Lyrics.

RIP to Dean Koldenhoven, the former mayor of Palos Heights who defended the right of a Muslim group to build a mosque in his town, rejecting the bigoted invective of some residents. It was a big story 25 years ago, and voters quickly turned him out of office. www.jfklibrary.org/events-and-a...

You know you've led a cool life when the part of your obituary about your most famous accomplishment contains the phrase "unfinished musical about the vampire Nosferatu." (Gift link)

This is a direct, thoughtful essay explaining what incarcerated people in Illinois lose as prison officials prevent them from getting physical mail from people who love them.

My all-time favorite roadside art oddity. You can make a nice day trip out of hitting the birthplace of Culver's in Sauk City (it's the same as other locations but there's a monument) and going to Devil's Lake, a truly excellent state park for swimming and hiking and cooking out.

I wrote about one of my favorite places in the universe for the @chicagoreader.com Broke Day Trips issue. Dr. Evermor's Sculpture Park is a few hours away, northwest of Madison, but it's free! chicagoreader.com/city-life/br...

Schoolchildren in Rock County, Wis. receive extensive information about local boy Sterling North and also Japanese tourists sometimes visit the area because his classic book “Rascal” became a well-loved cartoon over there, with unfortunate ecological results.

Reminds me of the time the Chicago parks officials closed arguably our best park, Promontory Point, on a July Saturday and broke a bunch of their own rules so Mellody Hobson and George Lucas could get married at a place where non-famous people constantly marry without doing these things.

No disrespect to Giannis but he’s the past of the Milwaukee Bucks. The future is the huge Serbian teenager named Bogoljub the Bucks drafted in the 2nd round last year.

Thanks to Mike Stephen from Outside the Loop Radio for having me on @wgnradio.bsky.social to discuss my story for @injusticewatch.org and @boltsmag.org on a court ruling and legislation that clash with Eileen O'Neill Burke's efforts to stop exonerated people from getting certificates of innocence.

Illinois has lagged behind other states when it comes to state compensation for people who are wrongfully convicted. A new bill aims to change that. (Co-published with @boltsmag.org) buff.ly/DbhCj4f

I’m in the middle of a Nightmare on Elm Street series rewatch, so I’m also surveying Freddy-themed music and, with due respect to Dokken and the Fat Boys, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the French Prince’s A Nightmare on My Street is the best music anyone made about Freddy, and New Line cinema sued them!

Once had an MRI. On the way in the guy asked me what music I wanted. Anxious, I blurted the 1st thing that came to mind: Bob Dylan. I'm not even a Dylan guy! Then, 2 songs in they played Kenny Rogers The Gambler & I laughed so hard the guy told me I had to stop moving or they'd have to redo the scan
