I’m sorry but I think b) is at least a little bit cope. It’s reasonable to think teams built around depth, positional flexibility, and maximizing matchup advantages in the regular season rather than high-end talent are likely going to disappoint in the playoffs relative to their overall record.

This is one of those things that annoys me that more teams don't do. If you really believe in your ability to maximize overlooked players and prospects, you should be A LOT more willing to part with your prospects than other teams are. This is part of why the Dodgers are so good.

I know the general consensus is that the playoffs are random, but I don't totally buy that The Brewers by and large manage their teams like a lot of teams do in the playoffs -- 5-and-dive your pitchers, overuse your best high-leverage relievers, etc. Do they have another gear for the playoffs?

Yeah it stinks that AJ Preller and Dave Dombrowski are kind of viewed as punchlines in a lot of baseball circles, but they've built teams that are trying to actually win the World Series and not just have everything go write to make a brief run, and I think that's admirable.

They already have more hitters than spots in the lineup and there aren’t exactly a ton of impact bats available. Where is the upgrade supposed to come from? Skubal instead of Sproat or whoever in the playoffs is a way bigger upgrade than any hitter they could possibly add.

I think this would be Bad For Baseball, but the problem isn’t really the Dodgers. It’s that a team like the Brewers, that has an absolutely loaded farm system comparable to the Dodgers’ and a MUCH bigger need for Skubal, might not be willing to give up as much as the Dodgers are.

whoops I just spent too much money on a whim to see Jason Isbell and St. Vincent (separately) play shows at the Metropolitan Museum of Art using guitars from the Met's collection this February. (The Met is opening a guitar-focused collection next year, which is extremely cool)
