I don't know in this case.

Looking at Wikipedia, it connects them to the Inca & Maya, so that gives some hint of their native range.

They are South American, but how far south I don't know offhand.

Same areas sometimes but not the same exact spots. Three of the outbreaks in East Oregon were noted last year. The one in Lower Moyamensing as well, though those might be slightly different.

These outbreaks of what appear to be the same type are in multiple different neighborhoods & a source is usually identifiable, so I don't think it is someone casting seeds.

If they are sterile, how are they escaping all over the place & coming back year after year in the same spots?

Yeah, I don't see the Petunias get much action compared to other flowers.

Is that a specific cultivar or something? It seems like that specific type does really well as crackweed spill-over.
