It's a reminder of how layered this stretch of the High Street is. Near here is the Red Lion Hotel: one of the earliest surviving buildings in Colchester city centre. Looking at the modern view, the frontage has changed, but the street is still very much a place of shops, food and everyday life.

Historic England records this as Woolworths' 40th branch in the British Isles, opening here in September 1914. The original premises were shared with Burtons until 1935, when Woolworths took over their share of the freehold.

Objects like this remind us that Roman glass was not only functional but also highly experimental in its design and production. These bowls travelled widely, and this one ended up accompanying its owner into the grave.

The bowl belongs to a type known as “pillar-moulded,” named for the ribs pressed into its surface. This example is polychrome, created in the moulding process, producing a unique decorative finish that was not millefiori but gave the impression of stone or agate.

This patterned glass bowl was found in a grave at Sheepen, on the outskirts of Colchester. Dating to the Neronian period (AD 54–68), it may even have been made a little earlier.

The modern view shows just how much has changed. The hotel and pub have gone, and the site is now part of a parade of shops, but the location is still right in the thick of city life.

Excavation after demolition found that parts of the medieval church had Roman walls for their foundations, which is a reminder of how many layers of Colchester's story are packed into this one part of the city.
