This past week's monsoon rain won't help much. Even though monsoons can bring up to 75% of annual rainfall in parts of AZ/NM, Lake Powell is filled by Rocky Mountain snowmelt far upstream. Monsoon rain mostly evaporates or soaks into dry soil before reaching the river. [3/4]

Two things are driving this: a megadrought that's gripped the West for 2.5 decades, and a record-low 2025–26 snowpack that left rivers with far less snowmelt this spring. The graph shows the pattern—a peak each autumn, a low each spring, but an overall downward trend since ~2000. [2/4]

Lake Powell was just 22% full on July 19 — the lowest it's been on this date in at least 30 years. The Colorado River system overall sat at 33% of capacity. [1/4] 🌎️ 🧪🧵

The animation tracks ocean temps in the upper 1,000 ft of the equatorial Pacific, August 2025–June 2026. Last fall, cool La Niña waters dominated—but by late November, a strong, deep wave of warmth began pushing east across the basin. By late January, it surfaced in the eastern Pacific. (2/3)

As a climate information site, we are unlikely to develop a weather or real time conditions app. But we are thinking about ways of making local climate information available to people. And on a personal note, I have my local NWS page pinned to my homepage like an app!

So NOAA fairly recently switched from using the traditional Oceanic Niño Index (ONI) to the relative ONI (RONI) for determining the ENSO state. It looks like using the ONI 92/93 was not considered an El Niño winter, but is under RONI. You can read more about ONI v. RONI in our latest article.
