Climate change is making Europe hotter and drier, and that's massively increasing the fire risk - this is the third study from @wwattribution.bsky.social in recent weeks looking at this triple threat. And things are only going to get worse until we drastically cut our emissions to get to net zero.

World Weather Attribution

Human-induced climate change made the extreme fire weather that fuelled the recent destructive wildfires at least twice as likely in France and at least 20 times more likely in Spain, according to our new study.

Climate change is making extreme weather events more frequent and more dangerous, even in Europe. It's not something that happens to other people. It's not something that will happen in the future. It's happening now, TO ALL OF US, and it will keep getting worse until we decide to act.

Holiday in the climate emergency. No that’s not AI or edited, just a snapshot I just took with my phone on Lacanau beach in France. What future will this boy grow up in? It is in our hands, but time is running out.

Only about one-quarter of the 2,500 online articles about last month’s heatwave mention the words “climate” or “global warming.” Less than 5% of stories included information about the UK’s climate goals. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

🧵 Heatwaves in the UK might conjure images of ice cream on the beach - but our new study estimates that more than 2,700 people died from heat-related causes during the May and June heatwaves in England and Wales - with 42% of those due to the extra heat added by human-induced climate change.

Really hoping this is just a rogue ensemble member and not a glimpse of the next few weeks 🫤

Today’s GFS 18Z for 11 July showing max temperatures in England reaching 41°C Not to be taken as a deterministic forecast. However, this suggests that yet more extreme heat is possible in the next few weeks, which is made more likely and intense by climate change driven by burning fossil fuels.

So true. Climate change is stoppable - we just have to decide to get on with it...

So here are some thoughts on this heatwave: against fatalism, against inevitability, and against the fossil fuel industry's ongoing efforts to ensure they do as much damage as they can over the coming decades. These fossil-fuelled extremes emerge from decisions we can identify in recent history

This heatwave isn't just smashing temperature records, it's also been horribly humid - which makes the heat even more dangerous. New WWA study highlights the rapid rate of warming in Europe (+2C since 2003 😱) - and yes, that's all thanks to fossil fuels, and yes, it's going to get worse

Prof Friederike Otto

Europe's worst heatwave so far, in terms of heat stress measures and temperatures - brought to you by fossil fuels. New @wwattribution.bsky.social study showing how such deadly heat became possible in only a few decades. www.worldweatherattribution.org/fossil-fuel-...
