Just read an account of the military execution of a Confederate soldier for desertion in 1864, which was witnessed by an entire division, including his enslaved body servant. #CivilWarMemory

It shows how little Mr. Johnston understands about the history of the South. By "native born," is he including the roughly 4 million Black Southerners, who were enslaved and who contributed to the defeat of the Confederacy in numerous ways? I suspect not. #CivilWarMemory

The great historian Robert A. Gross, author of the prize-winning, The Minutemen and Their World, has written a historically-informed, nuanced rejoinder to J.D. Vance’s use of U.S. history as a tool of blood-and-soil nationalism. theamericanscholar.org/gratitude-is...

I wasn't able to see the Confederate monuments exhibit at the Brick Museum in LA, but I did purchase the exhibit book. It includes one of my tweets. That's a first for me.

Steven Spielberg's movie LINCOLN (2012) is filled with factual and interpretive inaccuracies and I've never once hesitated from encouraging people to see it. As long as you don't misinterpret Hollywood for history, you will be just fine. #CivilWarMemory

After spending a week in DC, I am convinced that Trump's arch will be built. It's appalling, but so many of you seem to think that it will be easy to remove down the road. It is not. It is extremely difficult to remove these structures once completed. I said goodbye to these views last week.
