“Arizona earned the dubious distinction of ranking No. 1 for the country's most frustrating summer parking destinations... Results showed that 59% of Arizonans said they've skipped a summer destination because parking was simply too stressful, while 22% said they've been involved in a dispute.”

"For Edina resident John Crabtree, the debate wasn’t simply about preserving parking in front of homes. He questioned whether the city’s own data justified a major redesign, noting officials identified only one bicycle crash along the corridor over the past decade." Data is used for good and bad. GL

When Arizona became a state in 1912, roads were scarce and built largely with prison labor. (In states like Alabama people were conscripted to build roads until 1910 or so, not in this linked piece.) The professionalization of civil service was concurrent and codependent with the growth of cars.

There are a lot of local regulations that are outdated and should be removed, but always be wary of Chesterson’s Fence. Separate permits for ice cream isn’t that, now, though.

I'm super happy that Mamdani is cutting red tape for small businesses. Frozen dessert permits seem frivolous now, but ice cream used to be really deadly! Absent good sanitary practices, it used to be carry of all sorts of diseases (remember typhoid mary?). The initial law was a public health win!

Much of the population decline in big cities in the 1970s was that household size shrunk (kids moved out), not that the total number of households declined. Between this again, lower immigration, and tax base challenges due to economic changes, there's reason to worry about US cities overall health.

We tolerate a lot more failure from private actors than we do the state. Waymo, SpaceX, scooters, etc, get to make mistakes that would (and have) shut down public attempts as such things. How much failure we should tolerate from public or private actors is a political question, not an empirical one.
