Sorry, I used the term 'proportional representation' incorrectly. I was referring to the number of representatives per capita, which should be increased! Proportional representation applies to proportions of people behind certain political objectives.

Proportional representation would help a lot. We're outliers in having the lowest proportional representation among the world's democracies.

It's much, much easier and more emotionally gratifying to divide into tribes where the only demand on your creativity is finding new ways to express how awful the other tribe is, than to build a society that works for everyone. We've got both going on now, which explains some of the frustration.
